Christianity was formed as a sect of Judaism, the national religion of Biblical Israel that is commonly traced back to Abraham. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, His followers continued in Judaism, but began to question and then abandon various of the Old Testament Mosaic laws – which was an integral part of Judaism. They also began to expect the return of Jesus – actually at any moment. Furthermore, they began evangelism to reach people, Jews and Non-jews, with an emphasis upon Jesus and faith in Him rather than upon the Mosaic law. This, of course, was adverse to Judaism. As a result, they began to diverge from their mother religion of Judaism as a new religion and new faith basis began to take shape. That new religion was referred to as “The Way”. Its followers were eventually referred to as Christians.
